CentOS: How to change your hostname with PuTTY

I am using PuTTY in the following guide, but the same steps can be performed from any console.

  • Log into PuTTY using your username (usually root) and password
  • Type "cd /etc/sysconfig/" to take you to the sysconfig folder
  • Type "vi network" to open your network settings
  • Type "i" on your keyboard and update your HOSTNAME
  • Press "ESC" on the keyboard
  • Save the new configuration by typing ":wq!"
  • Finally, log off and reboot
